Life often throws us into situations where the unexpected can either derail us or become an opportunity to shine. Whether it’s a surprise twist in a business meeting or a high-pressure television broadcast, how we respond makes all the difference. Mindfulness, with its ability to anchor us in the present moment, has helped me navigate these challenges time and time again. Here are two stories from my own experiences that highlight the power of being present, no matter the circumstances.

When the Room is Bigger Than You Expected… Stay Present
It’s easy to feel in control when you know exactly what to expect. But what happens when that expectation suddenly shifts? I had an experience where I was invited to present an important proposal to a small group of upper editorial staff at a large media corporation. Simple enough, right?
It’s not about the situation—it’s about how you respond to it.
I walked into the meeting, ready to engage in a one-on-one discussion, only to find myself standing in a large boardroom, facing over 15 publishing executives. The surprise could have easily caused panic. But instead of letting the unexpected overwhelm me, I took a deep breath and chose to stay present.
Instead of getting caught up in the surprise of it all, I centred myself in the moment. I focused on connecting with the room, grounding myself in my message, and trusting that I was prepared to speak with clarity. In doing so, I was able to deliver my proposal flawlessly, answer every question with confidence, and ultimately land the contract.
The lesson? When you’re faced with the unexpected, your ability to stay present will allow you to remain in control. It’s not about the situation—it’s about how you respond to it. Mindfulness gave me the clarity and composure to thrive in that high-stakes moment.
Selling in the Spotlight: A Mindful Approach
Some years ago, I had the chance to appear on live television, selling flowering plants to an audience from coast to coast. As you can imagine, the pressure was on. The cameras were rolling, and I had just a few minutes to make an impact.
Mindfulness allowed me to remain in control, even when the pressure was at its peak.
I was in front of three cameras, with a massive countdown clock ticking down the seconds. The stakes were high, and the nerves could have easily gotten the best of me. But rather than succumbing to the pressure, I turned to mindfulness to guide me through the experience.
Here’s how mindfulness helped me succeed:
✨ Anchor in the Present. Instead of worrying about the time running out, I focused on each moment, making every word count.
✨ Engage with Intention. I connected with the cameras as if speaking to one person at a time—treating every viewer as though they were my sole focus.
✨ Trust the Message. Rather than stressing over perfection, I leaned into my passion for the plants and trusted that my knowledge would resonate with the audience.
By staying grounded, I was able to deliver my pitch confidently, answer questions with ease, and ultimately engage the audience in a way that felt authentic and impactful. Mindfulness allowed me to remain in control, even when the pressure was at its peak.
The Power of Presence in High-Stakes Moments
Both of these experiences taught me a powerful lesson: when things don’t go as planned, the most valuable tool we have is mindfulness. Whether it’s an unexpected twist in a meeting or the pressure of a live broadcast, our ability to stay present, adaptable, and focused on the task at hand allows us to rise to the occasion.
By staying present, we can shift from reacting out of stress or anxiety to responding with clarity, confidence, and adaptability.
In both situations, I could have chosen to get caught up in nerves, expectations, or surprises. Instead, I chose to stay present. I trusted myself and my preparation, which allowed me to deliver my best work in the moment.
Mindfulness is a powerful tool that allows us to remain calm and focused, even when faced with unexpected challenges or high-pressure situations. By staying present, we can shift from reacting out of stress or anxiety to responding with clarity, confidence, and adaptability. Whether it’s an impromptu meeting or a live television appearance, embracing mindfulness helped me turn potential obstacles into opportunities to perform at my best.
When we trust ourselves and the moment, we not only navigate challenges more effectively, but we also grow stronger and more resilient in the process.
